Training

Elimination

  • Dogs develop elimination habits during their first few months.
  • Dogs do not want to eliminate where they rest.
  • Dogs will return to their "usual spot" whenever possible.
  • Dogs can be trained to react to a stimulus (e.g. repeating a phrase) in a certain way.
  • Positive reinforcement (praise or treats) supports a desired behavior.

Digging Problems

Your dog will often dig holes out of boredom (when left alone while you're at work), to cool off on a hot summer's day, or to escape an enclosure.

Dogs also dig to loosen (and eat) soil if they aren't getting the proper nutrients in their diet. If you see your dog eating the soil (or notice his dirty nose), consider giving him vitamin supplements. Check with your veterinarian to see what type and dose is best.
